Bob Slocum and his companion, Sammy, make a unique pair at The Homestead at Montrose; Bob spent most of his life working as a career construction inspector and accountant — and Sammy is a four year old miniature schnauzer. When Bob decided to look for an assisted living facility that would help him live on his own, finding a place that felt right meant finding a facility that would allow Sammy to move in with him. Unfortunately, there weren’t many options.
Pets offer unconditional love and continuity in the midst of life’s transitions. For someone like Bob — who experiences short-term memory loss and occasional bouts of dementia — being able to live with his best friend was critical to maintain his quality of life. Volunteers of America understood the power of their bond. |

But Bob and Sammy’s experience is by no means exceptional. Volunteers of America is committed to creating supportive, nurturing environments — designed specifically for each individual — to help those in need.
Bob’s search for a place to call home ended as soon as he walked in the front door at The Homestead and joined the 70 other residents. Staff members helped Bob adjust to life on his own and establish himself within the community. Bob immediately became involved in the center’s activities and quickly earned a reputation for being a great guy to know. Thanks to Volunteers of America, a man who has moved 68 times in his life is finally able to lay down roots — with his best friend. And they don’t plan on going anywhere.
