David T. Bowman

David Bowman serves as executive vice president and general counsel at the Volunteers of America national office. In this role, he confers with the organization’s board, executive team, local office CEOs and staff on matters involving legal interpretation and decisions related to Volunteers of America’s activities, policy questions and operating issues. Specifically, Bowman directs all legal affairs for the organization including general corporate matters, real estate, intellectual property, human resources and public/government affairs. He also manages activities and actions with outside counsel retained to represent the Volunteers of America.

“There is a lot of personal satisfaction in working for an organization as dedicated to helping the underserved in our society as Volunteers of America is,” says Bowman. “By helping individuals, the impact of our work ultimately helps entire communities.”

Bowman brings to Volunteers of America valuable experience from working with the American National Red Cross, the nation's premier emergency response organization. He led the legal team responsible for the review of Sarbanes-Oxley legislation and the adoption of corresponding changes to the corporate governance policies. In addition, he was responsible for review and implementation by the Red Cross of legislation affecting corporate transactions, including the 2005 federal motor vehicle donation legislation.  Having worked with the Red Cross in Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts, Bowman brings lessons learned from that experience to the work of Volunteers of America in the Gulf Coast region.

Bowman has also worked as in-house counsel for several national and international companies including as general counsel of The NutraSweet Company, Monsanto, and Bell & Howell.
